Notable News: Another billionaire joins the cause...

Mark Zuckerberg Agrees To Give Away The Majority Of His Wealth To Charity

Zukerberg joins 17 other US billionaires in pledging to give away at least half their fortunes in a philanthropic campaign led by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates.   Not bad!

Cruz Roja - not quite the "Red Cross" in Mexico

Been staying in Ajijic, on the shores of Lake Chapala.  Cruz Roja is an interesting non-government organization - essentially a roving emergency service provider (including ambulences). More from the website below  ( http://www.cruzrojalakeside.com/ ). December's first donation...    Cheers, Michael

Cruz Roja translates in English to Red Cross.  However, Cruz Roja is not the Red Cross that most of us expats know and love.
North of the border we know the American Red Cross and Canadian Red Cross to be organizations that respond to large-scale emergencies and natural disasters as well as providing international relief.  They sponsor blood drives and maintain blood banks.
Cruz Roja Mexicana has a different role.  Their mission is to provide emergency service 24/7/365 to everyone in the local area.  They operate a 24-hour emergency medical care facility in Chapala.
The Chapala Chapter of Cruz Roja maintains two ambulances in service at all times, one in Chapala and one on the West side of Ajijic.  The ambulances are staffed by trained Paramedics and equipped with oxygen, EKG and defibrillators, back boards and a full array of emergency equipment.  The ambulances respond to every-day emergencies, including car accidents. There is also an urban rescue unit for extracting trapped victims from auto crashes, rooftops, wells and mountainous areas.
Cruz Roja Chapala services are provided on an ability-to-pay basis.  Approximately 65 % of actual costs for the services is paid by the patients.  The balance of the costs for the services and overhead are paid through donations and profits from fundraising events.
Neither Cruz Roja nor the Red Cross is a government agency.  There is no government financial support. They rely on donations of time and money to do their work.

Kiva Loan - Go Peru!

... adding to my Kiva loan "portfolio"... love this way of engaging...

"Maria, 29, lives in the region of Piura in the district of Tambogrande. It is a more humid region of northern Peru which grows a large quantity of mangoes and limes. She lives in her own home along with her partner and their three children.

Maria manages a small general store in the front of her home, selling everything from candy to rice to toilet paper to gifts. She is very well known in the area due to her high quality products and good selection.

This will be her first loan from Edpyme Alternativa with which she hopes to take advantage of bulk discounts and expand her inventory in order to increase her market share. She feels confident about the demand for her products."

Good Luck Maria!!!

Titz'n Glitz - gala tonite!

On the occasion of this evening's fund raising event in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia,  my third October donation was donated online to Titz'n Glitz.   www.titznglitz.com/halifax_home.htm   I am happy to add my support (hee).

"Titz'n Glitz Halifax raises funds for a project that was initiated in 2000 called
On The Front Line (breast cancer fund).

Money raised through Titz'n Glitz feeds this fund which provides short term financial assistance to Nova Scotia men and women with breast cancer who are in financial need.

Funds provided by Titz'n Glitz are distributed with the help of hospitals and social work departments across the province, to aid breast cancer survivors in financial need. Often, some of the most stressful realities are of a financial nature, including incidental costs. Women were missing chemo treatments because they couldn't afford a babysitter."

Thanks Rhonda Meyer for the idea!

Kiva.org - micro loans to relieve poverty

Hi:
Latest donation is to Kiva.org.

Actually this is a micro-loan vs. a donation.  But I plan to keep lending back into Kiva indefinitely by recycling the money as the loans get paid off.   Kiva is a cool organization as the website says;

"Kiva's mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty. Kiva empowers individuals to lend to an entrepreneur across the globe. By combining microfinance with the internet, Kiva is creating a global community of people connected through lending."

My loan went to support a group of people in Peru - specifically towards buying  fabrics and tools for a clothing business.

Relieving poverty by helping to make people self-sufficient?  I'm in.

Protecting natural habitat - Land Trusts

The Nova Scotia Nature Trust's Mission is "... To protect Nova Scotia’s outstanding natural legacy through land conservation. We envision a future in which Nova Scotia’s native species, and unique habitats and natural landscapes are protected in perpetuity, and in which this natural legacy is appreciated and actively stewarded."  see  http://nsnt.ca/aboutus/

I've been a long-time supporter of this great organization. It's hard not to like the benefits of protecting natural habitat so that everyone can connect to the sacredness of being in nature.  The NSNT's annual dinner and silent auction is on October 28th in Halifax. I've donated to this event as my first giving target in October.

Have a good sleep!

My first charity this month is Sleeping Children Around the World   (SCAW website)  .

(SCAW) donations provide bedkits to children of any race and/or religion who will benefit the most; typically being located in underdeveloped and developing countries.

No portion of a bedkit donation is spent on administration — 100% reaches a needy child. That is cool!
Why bedkits?

Plant a Mango Tree!

For a neat site that let's you choose from a catalogue of real gifts that go to needy villages, check out  http://www.plancanada.ca/  .    In this site you can donate mosquito netting, a farm kit including seeds to a needy area, and even gift animals like chicks or a pig!

I choose to donate the planting of 3 mango trees in a school yard.  I hope they make it to fruition!!
see  http://plancanada.ca/giftsofhope/shopexd.asp?id=1         ....not sure about the pig idea...

Cheers,
Michael

The Challenge = $108 of Monthly Donations

Hi! Welcome to this Blog!

An idea popped into my mind while meditating one day; why not challenge myself to give away some money  every month to different charities?   I will look for charities of interest anywhere in the world, and will split my monthly giving  "quota" between several charities/organizations.  It's time to become a philanthropist! Fortunately, there is no minimum dollar requirement.

[Philanthropy is the effort or inclination to increase the well-being of mankind, as by charitable aid or donations.]

Hey! Then I thought, if I share this challenge with others, then they may also get inspired and join the challenge!  Hopefully, they could also share their favourite and newly discovered charities (or other ways of giving) on this Blog.  That would give me more ideas for my own future donations, and could be of interest to other Bloggers too.  Cool.

By donating to many different charities I figure it will make me (us) more aware of the many needs in the world, and by actually donating, I (we) can actually be of real benefit vs. just thinking about it!

[I've chosen to give $108/month. Why the $108?  Well, it's known as a sacred number, and  for me it represents all the beings in all realms. This ties into having a big "aspiration". In buddhist practice (yes, I'm a buddhist practitioner), making regular, really big, positive aspirations is part of your practice, such as, "May all beings be happy".  Just thinking that thought with feeling effects your mindstream, and also (apparently) has a more cosmic benefit - let's say it produces 'good vibes'.]

So $108 is just my number, you could use any amount. I challenge YOU to make regular donations (of any amount) to new and different charities, and report back here to share your ideas, reasons for donating, and the charity info/link on this Blog.  I hope you share this with your friends and send them the link to this Blog.  The world needs a lot of help!  Your comments on this Blog may inspire others, who inspire others...

May this Blog creates good vibes!
